Language is composed of expresseive and receptive language. Receptive communication is the language in our brain and expressive language is the audible representation of our thoughts and images. Language can be categorized in Semantics (word meaning), Syntax (sentences), and Pragmatics (use of language socially). Language is considered disordered when 1 or more areas of language disrupt a person’s ability to communicate effectively with others in their environment.

For Receptive Language:
Semantics:

  • Difficulty finding/acquiring words.
  • Difficulty understanding word meaning.
Syntax:
  • Difficulty understanding long sentences, directions, verb forms
Pragmatics:
  • Difficulty understanding facial expressions, nonverbal gestures, understanding emotions, or a person’s inflection in their voice (rise and fall of voice).
For Expressive Language:
Semantics:
  • Limited Speech
  • Difficulty finding and acquiring new words
  • Trouble explaining word meaning
Syntax:
  • Uses one word, phrases, shortened sentences
  • Limited use of verb forms
Pragmatics:
  • Difficulty using words and sentences to communicate thoughts and needs verbally in communication interactions.

A Speech disorder is inability to produce sounds correctly or fluently or use your voice effectively.

Articulation disorder involves the substitution, deletion, or changes of a sound. (e.g. “fwog” for “frog”)

Phonological processing disorder involves a patterns to the sound errors, such as substituting all found sounds for back sounds. (e.g. “tag” for “gag”)

Fluency disorders affect speech fluency. “Bumpy” speech is called “disfluencies” and can appear during specific activities.
